London Chamber of Commerce Engages in Consultations on Natural Gas Policy

The London Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce its recent participation in the Ministry of Energy’s consultation on the long-term role of natural gas in Ontario’s energy system and economy. This critical dialogue aligns with the government’s efforts to shape Ontario’s energy future while balancing affordability, reliability, and environmental sustainability.

The consultation is part of the Ministry’s development of a Natural Gas Policy Statement, a cornerstone of Ontario’s integrated energy plan. The policy aims to provide clear direction on how natural gas will contribute to the province’s energy transition and long-term economic growth. Natural gas currently accounts for almost 40% of Ontario’s total energy use and serves as a vital component of the electricity generation mix, industrial processes, and residential heating.

"The natural gas network is a critical piece of Ontario’s energy puzzle, and its ongoing role must be carefully managed to ensure economic stability and support the transition to a cleaner energy system," said Kristen Duever, COO of the London Chamber of Commerce. "We appreciate the opportunity to contribute to this discussion and advocate for policies that benefit businesses and communities alike."

Key Recommendations from the London Chamber of Commerce:
  1. Pace the Transition to Clean Energy: The transition to a cleaner, more diversified energy economy should align with housing and business development needs. This approach ensures energy infrastructure supports growth without unnecessarily inflating costs.
  2. Maintain and Expand the Natural Gas Network: The natural gas network must remain viable to support rural and industrial economic development while facilitating energy transition efforts.
  3. Foster Innovation in Clean Energy Technologies: Ontario should prioritize integrating renewable natural gas (RNG), hydrogen, and carbon capture technologies within the natural gas system to lower emissions and enhance energy efficiency.
The Chamber’s recommendations are informed by Ontario’s commitment to an affordable, reliable, and clean energy future. The government’s integrated energy plan aims to balance environmental goals with the need for economic growth, highlighting the vital role of natural gas in supporting electrification, industrial competitiveness, and community resilience.

About the Consultation

The Ministry of Energy’s consultation seeks feedback from stakeholders, Indigenous communities, and the public on principles and commitments to inform the Natural Gas Policy Statement. Topics under consideration include:
  • Supporting energy affordability and customer choice
  • Enhancing power system reliability and security
  • Expanding the natural gas network to support economic growth
  • Integrating clean fuels like RNG and hydrogen
The final Natural Gas Policy Statement will be included in Ontario’s integrated energy plan, set for release in early 2025.
