London Chamber Joins National Call for Labour Stability at Canada’s West Coast Ports

The London Chamber of Commerce has joined chambers of commerce, boards of trade, and business associations from across Canada in signing a joint letter urging the federal government to take swift action to ensure long-term labour stability at Canada’s West Coast ports.

The letter, addressed to Hon. Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families, and Hon. John Zerucelli, Secretary of State for Labour, calls for the establishment of a B.C.-wide geographic certification to promote more sustainable labour relations and prevent future disruptions to Canada’s supply chain.

Between 2023 and 2024, shutdowns at West Coast ports delayed critical exports, disrupted an estimated $19.2 billion in cargo, and undermined Canada’s reputation as a reliable trading partner. The signatories are urging the government to act quickly—ideally through the Fall 2025 Budget Implementation Act—to implement recommendations from the Industrial Inquiry Commission led by Vince Ready and Amanda Rogers.

“The stability of Canada’s supply chain has a direct impact on businesses and consumers here in London,” said Kristen Duever, COO of the London Chamber of Commerce. “Ensuring consistent and reliable port operations is essential to supporting manufacturing, exports, and the broader economy.”

The business community’s letter emphasizes that Canadians cannot afford another shutdown at West Coast ports and that coordinated action is necessary to maintain competitiveness, protect jobs, and strengthen confidence in Canada’s economy.
